Sustainable New Zealand

Jump to a party

The Sustainable New Zealand Party is an environmentalist party that describes itself as neither left nor right wing. It was founded in 2019 by former Green Party candidate Vernon Tava out of concern at the lack of an environmental party open to working with right-wing parties in government. The party describes its values as environmental, economic, and social sustainability.

My local priorities
Clean up the inner harbour with ample and well-directed investment in stormwater infrastructure. Work between central and local government to create affordable, well-designed, dwellings. Integrate many modes of transport with beautiful urban design while improving parks and waterways of Auckland Central.
Why I’m running
New Zealand is an incredibly beautiful place but successive governments have done little to deal with persistent issues of environmental degradation and low productivity, leading to low incomes (coupled with high costs of living). For too long, a vote for the environment has also meant a vote to the left of Labour and a grab-bag of fringe issues. Sustainable New Zealand has been formed to put sustainability at the centre of politics and save the environment from being just a left-wing issue.
About me
I am a practising criminal defence barrister and I've been elected for two terms at local government level as a local board member (for an area roughly equivalent to the Auckland Central electorate) on Auckland Council. I'm a certified resource consent hearings commissioner and hold a Master of Laws degree in environmental law. I am keen to bring the experience and perspective that these roles have brought me to the contest for parliament.

My local priorities
Protect and enhance our natural environment. Replanting native bush, pest control and repairing our waterways. Raising awareness of and taking action on the risks of climate change. Focus on assisting farmers to adapt. Encourage innovation and productivity in Waimakariri.
Why I’m running
New Zealanders are fortunate. We live in a democratic, corruption free society. We are a caring society. However we have degraded our beautiful environment and allowed our productivity and standard of living to fall. This is odd as Kiwis are capable of high achievement. I want to see us protect and enhance our environment and become a more productive and fairer country. We have a duty to preserve and enhance NZ for those who come after us. The Sustainable NZ Party will focus on these issues.
About me
I am a retired anaesthetist and this has exposed me to a full range of New Zealanders. I understand the values and aspirations of our people and passionately believe in democracy, fairness and opportunity for all. I want my children and grandchildren to continue to enjoy the beautiful country I grew up in and have the opportunity to live a productive and meaningful life. I believe a sustainable NZ is essential and achievable. I believe I have the background and skills to help achieve this.

My local priorities
Advocate for a circular economy to address issues such as waste and pollution. Encourage lower levels of consumption to reduce the demand for our natural resources both locally and internationally. Improve the transportation system in Pakuranga to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cars.
Why I’m running
It is my goal to be a part of the way we manage our natural resources and take care of our environment here in New Zealand. I believe we can address the issues of sustainability by investing in the ecosystem that supports us.
About me
During my time as an economics student, I realised how important it is to maintain a careful relationship with nature whilst pursuing economic and social development. I am passionate about preserving our natural environment and building a community in which people can work together to resolve issues that threaten our quality of life in the long run.

Clean up our freshwater and target reduction of sedimentation and run-off through improved land management. Put cameras on fishing vessels and incentivise sustainable fisheries. Apply the provisions of the Waste Minimisation Act 2008.
Why I’m running
As a rural New Zealander I would like to see more being done with farmers and other groups to improve our water quality in a joint effort to sustain our waterways for future generations of New Zealand.
About me
I am a father of four children and have lived in the Waitaki district for 25 years being involved in many local community groups and projects in this time. I have worked as a truck and bus driver, an alternative education tutor and a tyre technician.

Why I’m running
I am passionate about Aotearoa New Zealand – particularly my home city of Wellington, Kapiti Coast, and Wairarapa. I am driven to achieve the integration of sustainability, the environment and commerce. I am pro-business and believe by ensuring business is strong that the principles of sustainability can be optimised and capitalised.
About me
I believe in pushing the boundaries for progress. I am a strategic thinking problem solver – I like to look at all issues holistically, globally, strategically, innovatively and with an unrestricted "what if?" attitude. I believe to date that what is missing is the integration of sustainability, environment and commerce.

My local priorities
Build a community hub for Whangaparāoa peninsula ensuring support NGO's have a fit for purpose place of delivery. Local job training and creation removing dependence on locals needing to travel both to learn skills and then find jobs. Gaining a four-lane Penlink initial build ensuring a fit for purpose result and minimised environmental impacts.
Why I’m running
I see New Zealand as a paradise! Past governments have failed us in dealing with issues of environmental degradation and low productivity. The result has been low incomes and high costs of living. A vote for the environment has also meant a vote to the left of Labour and a grab-bag of issues many disagree with. I joined and became a candidate for Sustainable New Zealand to put sustainability at the centre of politics and save the environment from being just a left-wing issue.
About me
I have stood for the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board and on both occasions included a passionate commitment to the environment. In the first election I stood for stamping out the use of glysophate in weed control. In the second, I took a wider brush to the canvas with support for my team's commitment to supporting local initiatives. I love that at the heart of Sustainable NZ policy is a commitment to help local communities solve issues themselves within a framework of support and incentives.

My local priorities
Reduce reliance on personal vehicles to get into and around the city by making public transport a better option. Encourage the opportunities that come from 'living local' to help revitalise our commercial and business centres. Look at ways for recreation, industry and transport to utilise the Waitemata harbour more efficient and cleanly.
Why I’m running
New Zealand needs a strong voice for the environment willing to work with parties across the spectrum. Creating a sustainable New Zealand where people and the economy can thrive in harmony with nature is essential for generations to come. We need policy that makes it easy for people and companies to choose the environmental option and to foster innovation and sustainable industry practices and add value to our primary industries.
About me
My wife and I recently chose Glenfield as a place to put down roots after having been lucky enough to live and work throughout New Zealand and around the world. As a news and travel visual journalist I've had the privilege of seeing behind the scenes on a wide variety of issues and believe strongly that the environment should be forefront of all our minds. Parliament needs a fresh approach to the environment that stretches across party lines and isn't tied up in left wing fringe issues.
