Mayor of Gisborne

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Gisborne District Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

It's been a huge challenge leading the council through a global pandemic and economic uncertainty while facing the climate crisis. We have managed so far by working together as a team for the benefit of our community, but there is more to do. I will ensure that we focus on facing climate change, caring for our environment, improving our regional infrastructure and ensuring that our economic recovery reaches all corners of our community.

About me

I see huge potential in our region and want to support and enable the changes, innovation and possibilities that will allow everyone to thrive. It has been a privilege to serve as your Mayor for the past 3 years and I am proud to have led our council locally and on the national stage. I will lead Council to focus on doing the basics well. I bring experience from both an academic and business background.

My priorities
  1. Strategic, accountable leadership. Putting our community front and centre in our decision-making.
  2. Regional climate change champions. Future-focused environmental action.
  3. Smart infrastructure – fit-for-purpose transport network, housing focus, modernise district plans.
