West Harbour Community Board

The West Harbour Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Dunedin City Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of six members. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Climate change and resilience

Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

    Encourage Dunedin City Council not to soften or delay their carbon neutral 2030 commitment.

    Advocate for a better bus service to help reduce transport emissions and for waste reduction options to reduce landfill emissions.

  • Make people more aware of the available new technology and its benefits such as solar panels and storage batteries.

    Ensure sufficient emphasis is put on improving infrastructure to cope with more extreme weather events.

    Improve networking within the West Harbour area to improve awareness of civil defence emergency strategies.

  • Plan and prepare our low-lying coastal areas for flood and storm resilience.

    Encourage new builds on hillsides rather than on or below sea level.

    As coordinator of our community response group, continue to prepare for natural disaster working with civil defence.

  • Support every household in the West Harbour Area to have a Civil Defence Plan and join Otago Gets Ready.

    Commit to funding a project where individuals and groups can work towards developing resilient households and community networks.

    Explore the viability of a daily rail car service and smaller busses or minivans during off-peak hours that are hybrid vehicles.

  • Facilitating individual households to participate in mitigating climate change through such domestic scale improvements as rain water tanks.

    Investigate the feasibility of installing secure cycle storage at strategic areas within the West Harbour communities.

    Investigate the feasibility of installing EV chargers at strategic areas within the West harbour communities.

  • We need a civil defence plan.

    Improve public transport.

  • Strengthen community networks to help the local response to civil defence emergencies.

    Advocate for services that will help locals reduce emissions (more frequent and lower cost buses).

    Convey to council the support local communities require as the impacts of climate change become more apparent.

  • Continue to work towards carbon neutrality through waste reduction, carbon offsetting, smarter engineering, waste reduction etc.

    Encourage higher uptake of low emission travel, public transport and working with businesses and households to reduce their carbon footprint.

    Work with community and business towards self-resilience, so that in an event of emergency, the community can sustain itself.

  • Commit to working for cycling support including an e-bike charging station at Port Chalmers.
