Timaru District Council

Geraldine Ward
The Timaru District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). One councillor will be elected from the Geraldine ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Why I'm standing

Our district's liveability and preparedness are not down to chance. It will take foresight, wide-ranging skills, and courage to keep and improve them. My background is in national conservation and recreation advocacy, farming, governance, teaching, and journalism. I embrace critical thinking and stand on democracy. I have the knowledge, know-how, and fortitude to shape the future of the Geraldine District as Geraldine Ward Councillor on the Timaru District Council.

About me

I believe in democracy, working across political lines, the benefits of 'local', critical thinking, and that the high health of nature is critical to our future. I work in collaboration with diverse groups on the NZ Landcare Trust and the Land Safety Forum. I have driven development of Geraldine's new strategic plan as a Geraldine Community Board member. As Federated Mountain Clubs' Immediate Past President, I am a practised advocate for conservation and recreation.

My priorities
  1. Promote future-proofing of local government, based on genuine democracy and local ownership.
  2. Implement Geraldine's new strategic plan, which was developed by the whole community.
  3. Restore and protect our natural environment.
