The Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Far North District Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of eight members: seven members elected by voters, including one member from your area, and one councillor from the Far North District council. There will be no election this year because there are the same number of candidates as there are positions. Why I'm standing

The Russell Ōpua riding represents two communities which have their own unique profiles. The marine environment is important to both, as is the sustainability of the respective communities. With our current community board member standing down, I felt it was important to step up and ensure that these communities had good representation through the community board to ensure that our voices were heard at the council table.

About me

I've been involved in various community activities including 18 years as a volunteer ambulance officer, chair of the business association, and numerous community events. I have spent the last 25 years with the R. Tucker Thompson, helping to establish and run the Sail Training Trust. I'm a chartered member of the Institute of Directors and have held governance positions on a number of boards many of which have had community impact.

My priorities
  1. Ensure that the community voice is cohesive and consistent.
  2. Build on work carried out by previous members particularly in the areas of sustainability.
  3. Encourage the community to work together on innovative solutions for big issues, eg climate change.
