Rangitīkei District Council

Central General Ward
The Rangitīkei District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 11 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Five councillors will be elected from the Central ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Work with the regional council and private providers to maintain affordable transport links for all.

    Build a cycling and walking track round the outskirts of Marton to see the countryside, the housing and our areas of natural wonder.

  • Ideally if could make affordable, some mini-bus/shuttle service to assist disadvantaged in our community. (A regional council issue).

    Encourage central government to prioritise road maintenance as roads not in good condition currently.

    Build a resilient roading network. It is 45% of our budget. Identify Taihape/Napier as a special highway.

  • Support the good work currently being done by the District Council on transport.

  • Ensure an approach to repairing and maintaining of footpaths occurs to protect all our people and create safe paths for outdoor activity.

    Consider what opportunities there are for walking and cycling tracks and our current ones are maintained and improved.
