Mayor of Tararua

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Tararua District Council mayoral election.

Sharon Wards

Tararua District Councillor – Northern Ward

Why I'm standing

I believe that I have the leadership skills, different experiences and an open communication style to provide our ratepayers with a competent, credible choice for change. I have served as councillor for the last three years so understand the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for our district.

About me

I have been vested in our community for over 32 years and been in a wide range of governance, science and health-based roles. I "get" rural, I communicate openly through listening, seeking alternate views then making courageous decisions. I will front-foot issues, focus on priorities and think about the long-term impact of my decisions. I will represent Tararua loudly and proudly.

My priorities
  1. Focus on the key priorities for our district so that ratepayers receive services that meet needs.
  2. Communicate in a manner that community believes they are consulted with, not consulted to.
  3. Look to the future, model good governance principles and lead councillors with positivity.
