Mayor of Timaru

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Timaru District Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

I want a strong, transparent council where robust debate is welcomed. A council that is willing to make informed decisions without endless consultants' reports. There is a need to focus on delivery, especially on large projects. Need much better lines of communication with residents, ratepayers and interest groups over the district's issues. "I believe it's better to take people along the journey rather than keep them in the dark."

About me

I believe in transparency and everyone getting a fair shot. Democracy and having a choice is important. Being a former journalist, I have an investigative mind and don't mind asking the hard questions. I am not afraid to have an opposing opinion as I believe robust, open debate delivers better decision-making. I would encourage delivery rather than a talkfest around the council table while ensuring ratepayers' money is not wasted.
