Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Ensure a capable civil defence unit exists learning from past national emergency events.
Establish energy efficiency policy.
Upgrade infrastructure to cope with more extreme weather.
Implement effective flood protection measures to protect against the devastating human, economic and environmental costs of flooding.
Improve and upgrade drainage infrastructure to prevent devastating flooding and keep communities safe.
Upgrade stormwater systems to meet the demands of a growing population, climate change and replace aging infrastructure.
Ensure civil defence preparedness is coordinated and effective.
Ensure climate change policies are compliant with international obligations and compatible with trading partners' commitments.
Ensure earthquake strengthening requirements are reflective of risk.
Assess the level of risk from earthquake strengthening requirements and guide occupiers to make necessary improvements.
