Mayor of Buller District

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Buller District Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

I believe there are pivotal decisions for Buller to be made in the next three years that need established and trusted relationships with West Coast councils, iwi and government. I have developed these relationships over the past six years and I am the best to work collaboratively to achieve outcomes. Government has zero appetite to work with negativity; I believe we must be positive and provide solutions by working together. That approach will continue to serve us well.

About me

I am born and bred local and have approached my local government roles firstly as a councillor then as mayor with professionalism and humility to learn how local government works and how we consider and build communities. I believe this is not about big business. It is about building respectful relationships with community and across central and local government and our key industries. I want it always to be a team approach including councillors, staff and community all playing a part.

My priorities
  1. Focus on affordability, efficiency in local service delivery and community facilities and population growth.
  2. Focus on regional collaboration including new funding streams for infrastructure and reducing rates through government support.
  3. Build community trust and confidence by ensuring there is a plan and together there are great opportunities to grow.
