Mayor of Buller District

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local governments play a central role in protecting the environment, reducing waste and safeguarding biodiversity. The worsening state of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers is a major challenge for local councils, which work with regional councils in the management of water resources in their area.

  • Ensure sufficient investment in Three Waters infrastructure to protect supply and safety of drinking water and minimise environmental discharge.

    Implement the new 10 year waste collection system using wheely bins to reduce cost to households and improve local recycling options.

    Plan new building areas to allow for more efficient building styles, energy generation and natural hazard management.

  • Embrace the new scenario via the adoption of a Resource Based Economy and start sharing in the repair of our damaged environment.

    Recognise new freedoms enabled by abandoning pointless work and direct energies and resources towards projects that benefit all.
