Christchurch Central/Ōhoko Constituency
Environment Canterbury is the regional council for Canterbury. It makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of up to 16 councillors. are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region), including two councillors from the Christchurch Central/Ōhoko  constituency. Up to two councillors can be appointed by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change and resilience

Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

    Keep engaging with and push on electric public transport options and singular solar for buildings and transport.

  • Commit council to leading change to help ratepayers and entities reduce emissions to within science-backed achievable levels.

    Regenerate native flora and fauna from the mountains to the sea.

  • Accelerate protecting water and future generations by safeguarding rivers, lakes and groundwater to handle floods and droughts.

    Commit to supporting local climate solutions by partnering with farmers, businesses and communities on renewable energy and emission reduction.

    Formulate climate-ready infrastructure by upgrading flood protection, public transport and coastal defences to cope with extreme weather.

  • Reduce CO2 emissions from personal transport by enhancing public transport and accelerating the adoption of zero-carbon public transport.

    Review and where necessary improve defence against flooding, landslip and wildfire in preparation for more frequent extreme weather.

  • Fix the failures of ECan core functions governing waterways, the environment and providing efficient public transport first.

    I have yet to see any proof or scientific evidence that paying tax or rates reduces climate change or greenhouse gases.

    Remove all tax and rates charged on the premise of climate change immediately and concentrate on what can realistically be achieved.
