Far North District Council

Te Hiku General Ward
The Far North District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). two councillors will be elected from the Te Hiku ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

  • Prepare communities with resilient infrastructure and emergency plans, collaborating with locals to protect livelihoods and the environment.

    Work with farmers, businesses and iwi to balance environmental care with economic needs, using science, local knowledge and common sense.

  • Bound all waterways, including streams, rivers and lakes, by a 100 metre minimum planting of native NZ trees and plants.

    Encourage and provide, where possible, regular public transport and safe cycling within Kaitaia.

    Plant hundreds of thousands of native NZ trees.
