Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Incentivise off-grid living, small-scale water collection and storage and energy generation for resilience to drought and earthquakes.
Promote agroforestry for carbon capture, not pine trees, to aid climate change adaptation by reducing floods, drought and wind.
Support natural flood control using weirs, dams, pools and wetlands to slow water down so it can recharge the aquifers used for irrigation.
Encourage energy efficiency and sustainable choices without forcing costly one-size-fits-all solutions.
