Taupō General Ward
The Taupō District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). seven councillors will be elected from the Taupō ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

Utilities and services

  • Educate people not to use single-use items made of toxic plastics and to recycle everything they can.

    Improve drinking water as current supply is full of chlorine and hydrofluosilicic acid. Upgrade the plant and use infrared laser ASAP.

    Manage our water supply and wastewater locally and encourage the Department of Health to amend illegal acts that push chemicals.

  • Ensure safe, reliable drinking water, wastewater and sewerage services that meet community health and environmental standards.

    Maintain clean streets and public spaces to create a safe, attractive and welcoming environment for residents and visitors.

  • Investigate cost-effective alternatives to solid waste disposal as a means to exit the current landfill operation for Taupō.

    Maintain focus on water services delivery with the current in-house model with a view to reappraising this in two years' time.

  • Review fluoridation of water supplies in the Taupō District and consult the community on whether they want it to continue.

    Review the bang for buck of new investment in water and wastewater utilities irrespective of central government guidance or dictates.

    Review the recent decision to continue with bag collection instead of bins and develop a more calculated policy for the future.
