Why I'm standing

I am concerned about where we are going. Bureaucracy, like rust, does not sleep. With little or nothing to show, we have had more than 36 percent rate increases compounding over the last three years and (i) have ever-increasing council bureaucracy in headcount and cost; (ii) have a council culture lacking a can-do attitude, shielding behind an opaque veil of blaming government whilst neglecting the residents and ratepayers paying their wages; (iii) spend money we do not have; and (iv) lack accountability.

About me

I have a proven, successful track record as a businessman and lawyer. I am an ex-Army officer. I successfully sold my IT and telecommunications business to an Australian venture capital firm in early 2018, enabling me to retire comfortably. I hold a NZLS practising certificate and am an officer of the High Court of New Zealand. Professionally, I mediate and litigate. I bring disagreeing parties together to achieve resolution. I get things done!

My priorities
  1. Focus on ratepayer value through a vigorous, relentless focus on council's core purpose, business and spending.
  2. Limit rate increases to CPI or 3 percent per year except for extraordinary circumstances.
  3. Empower local communities by delivering community-led, cost-benefit-based services funded by local targeted rates.
