Wairoa District Council

Wairoa General Ward
The Wairoa District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of six councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). three councillors will be elected from the Wairoa ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local government is a foundational part of our democracy. But local democracy isn’t just about holding elections every three years – it’s about the day-to-day ways people have their say in the decisions that affect us all.

  • Continue to review council performance and maintain transparent reporting through surveys.

  • Focus on economic development as mayor, and share social and cultural matters with Māori representatives from the council.

    Lobby for the removal of excise duty on mead to help the bee industry and promote pub drinking to keep alcohol away from children.

  • Establish regular community forums for decision-making input.

    Increase transparency with open data and real-time council reporting.

    Strengthen iwi and council partnerships for shared governance.

  • Provide regular updates on council activity to keep the community informed.

    Reduce the number of FTEs in council and reduce duplication of resources.

    Spend less on consultants and third-party suppliers where necessary.
