Mayor of Waitaki

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Waitaki District Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

I believe we need real people representing real issues. I am not running to play politics but to change what is possible. I believe we need courage, clarity and action right now, and I am here to offer all three. I believe the one-size-fits-all approach handed down by central government makes it obvious that local government voices are not being heard by central government. I believe they have lost touch with what is really important, and it is local government's job to remind them.

About me

I believe local government is effectively all about working with people. I can work with anyone and talk about almost anything. I have enough previous experience in local politics, finance, marketing, negotiation, decision making, public speaking and life itself – all giving me a broad skill base with which to enter this role. Academically, I have an NZDipBus and I am currently two thirds of the way through a BA, majoring in politics and international relations.

My priorities
  1. Limit rates increases because many constituents are on fixed incomes.
  2. Focus spending on essentials and carefully determine the priority of any other spending.
  3. Rebuild trust in democratic leadership by leading with people and not to people.
