Mayor of Whakatāne

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Whakatāne District Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

I'm a scientist and the best qualified to make the biggest difference in the town I grew up in. I'm the only candidate with mayoral experience. Council is mostly about infrastructure and I am an infrastructure expert. I will save money and have ideas for living within our means. Some of these are already in motion. I am a collaborator by nature and get on with people. I want to make a difference.

About me

I am honest, reliable, friendly and hard working. I'm the most qualified. I was a top scientist and have been an effective councillor for three years and the mayor for three. I have done a good job and achieved a lot in difficult circumstances. Given another term I will use what I have learned, I will build on what I have done. I would like to see the job through to completion.

My priorities
  1. Achieve common understanding of what affordable means in dollars and get commitment from councillors.
  2. Focus on good value for money and a council living within its means with critical infrastructure focus.
  3. Reduce wastage and improve efficiency through better prioritisation and better project justification.
