Alliance Party
The Alliance Party is a left-wing democratic socialist political party. It was initially founded as an alliance of small left-leaning parties led by Jim Anderton and New Labour in 1991. Its programs historically emphasise opposition to privatisation and support for more ambitious involvement of the government in the economy. It supported the fifth Labour government in 1999 before splitting in 2002 over New Zealand’s involvement in the invasion of Afghanistan.The current iteration of the Alliance is led by Victor Billot who has a background in communications with the Maritime Union.
