The New Zealand Labour Party (Rōpū Reipa o Aotearoa) is a centre-left social democratic party. Its program emphasises the incremental expansion in the role of government in the economy to address poverty and inequality. It currently has 34 seats in parliament. Formed in 1916 by Trade Unions and Socialist political parties, it is historically responsible for much of the modern welfare system. It has held seats in every Parliament since winning 8 in 1919, forming its first government in 1935. Since then, Labour has formed governments on 6 different occasions. Chris Hipkins is the party leader, and its 2026 slogan is ‘Better Starts Now.”
