Te Pāti Māori
Te Pāti Māori is a left-wing indigenous rights party. Its programme couples a larger role for the government in the economy alongside an emphasis on “for Māori-by-Māori” solutions and Māori self-determination. It was founded in 2004 by Tariana Turei as a breakaway from the Labour Party following the Foreshore and Seabed legislation that blocked Māori land claims. The party has been in government only once, from 2008 to 2014, in the fifth National government. It has regularly held Māori seats in Parliament and currently holds 4 of the 7 Māori seats.
