West Coast-Tasman electorate

West Coast-Tasman stretches down almost the entirety of the South Island’s West Coast, starting from the Tasman region at Motueka, going past Westport, Greymouth, and Hokitika, before finishing at Haast. The seat is held by National’s Maureen Pugh, a list MP who became an electorate MP in the 2023 election, but is retiring in 2026. Pugh was elected with a margin of 13,317 in 2023. National won the party vote in 2023 with 33% of the vote, followed by Labour with 24%. Geographically, it is the largest electorate in the country.

Why I'm standing

I am a class lefty, that is I do believe many workers, families, small business owners, disabled and family owned farms are getting a raw deal. I am running for the Alliance as the party is back for the same reasons were founded and that is to reverse the profound and damaging changes in the last 40 years. I believe in the ownership of public assets, universal healthcare, fairer taxation and universal public services.

About me

So really, to borrow the words from another Alliance candidate, "I'm a political nobody", but perhaps that is what voters are after; not another career politician but a person who has weathered the hard knocks of life and can therefore relate to those in the electorate. I am a fierce advocate and have been active in many community groups in Aotearoa and abroad.

My priorities

  1. Affordable housing. Establishing a Ministry of Works to help build public housing.
  2. Access to healthcare. Funding community health hubs in each town with a Nurse Practitioner.
  3. Buying back previously owned state assets - Electricity and to run as a service to bring down costs.
