Christchurch City Council

Central Ward
The Christchurch City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 16 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the city). One councillor will be elected from the Central ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Christchurch City Council election.

Climate change and resilience

Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

  • Work with communities to better understand climate change issues affecting them and work together to come up with appropriate adaptation plans.

Work towards a greener city with the Urban Forrest Plan and the 'Greening the East' Model.

  • Commit to seeing Christchurch increase the city's tree cover and seeing progress with OARC.

Commit to council to continue working on the flood protection work and bring it forward from the long term plan if possible.

  • I want to secure a commitment from council and central government to begin work on a light-rail network.

I support achieving net zero greenhouse emissions by 2045 (with separate targets for methane) and to halve our emissions by 2030.

A low-emission and more sustainable economy will bring new opportunities, but we need to ensure it's a 'just transition'.
