Christchurch City Council

Central Ward
The Christchurch City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 16 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the city). One councillor will be elected from the Central ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Christchurch City Council election.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Ensure the proper maintenance for our roads, footpaths and greenspaces by having a schedule that's achievable and correct funding allocated.

Making sure we have cross over communication between road and infrastructure works to ensure we aren't wasting money digging up roads again.

Delivering chlorine free water and making sure our Waste Water Treatment Plant is up and running as quickly as possible.

  • Ensure control of the Three Waters remain with Christchurch City Council control.

Ensure new trickling filters are built at the wastewater plant and set up more redundancies for wastewater.

  • Introduce free swimming lessons and pool access for kids under the age of 16. I have already begun work on this policy.
