Christchurch City Council

Riccarton Ward
The Christchurch City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 16 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the city). One councillor will be elected from the Riccarton ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Christchurch City Council election.

Transport

Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Advocate strongly for a mass rapid transit business case which will lay foundations for commuter rail in greater Christchurch.

Plan for a mixed model of transport choices in Christchurch, where residents have many climate friendly commuting options.

Invest strongly and sensibly in current public transport infrastructure networks in our city.

  • Invest in rapid mass transport to create a functional public transport network for Christchurch.

Improve the safety of intersections and roadways for all road users.

Improve the feasibility of planning by further including emergency services and their ability to navigate streets and suburbs.

  • Maintain bus fare charges at current cheap, rate.

Work with police, GIS specialists and public transport experts to identify and resolve the city's dangerous intersections and roads.

For wheelchair users and infirm, identify footpaths and crossings that require re-leveling and resealing and improved bus user access points.

  • Increase public transport spending to better meet the needs of those who choose not to drive.

Work with ECan towards the aim of providing free bus services, at higher frequency, and with expanded routes.

Introduce bike share programmes to incentivise greater use of our existing cycleways.
