Riccarton Ward
The Christchurch City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 16 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the city). One councillor will be elected from the Riccarton ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Return Three Waters assets to local management.

    Deliver 'core services' better: smarter and fairer use of rates. More coordinated planning and delivery to ensure 'long term' solutions.

    Empower local communities to create spaces and services that meet the needs of residents.

  • Protect clean and safe drinking water for all residents.

    Provide an innovative and next-gen wastewater treatment plant that doesn't unfairly impact local communities .

    Provide further investment in maintenance around our city, which includes gutter and storm drain maintenance, footpaths and roading repairs.

  • Fund more council inspectors to monitor that council contractors are clearing drains, clearing drains, cutting grass berms and fields.

    Improve accountability and ownership by creating online platform for residents to see what contractors have done about reported issues.

    Encourage dog control to be proactive in removing stray dogs from the streets.

  • Support the transition to the the government's Three Waters plan to reduce duplicated bureaucracy across the country.

  • Continue strong investment into Three Waters so residents can rely on quality water in all areas.

    Remove red tape for frontline council workers or contractors to make it more efficient for them to fix and maintain our core infrastructure.

    Ensure street cleaning is prioritised in flood-prone areas of the city to make sure drainage is prepared for excessive rainfall.

  • Oppose chlorination of our water and agree for a better policy for managing our water.
