Environment Canterbury
Environment Canterbury is the regional council for Canterbury. It makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of up to 16 councillors. 14 councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region), including two councillors from the Christchurch South/Ōwhanga constituency. Up to two councillors can be appointed by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Why I'm standing
We live in an amazing region but much of what we value is threatened by climate change, un-sustainable land use and ongoing habitat removal for urban development and agriculture. We can meet our climate mitigation responsibilities, adapt to climate threats and enhance our natural environment while maintaining a viable local economy. Many Cantabrians are already making positive changes and finding more sustainable ways to work. I will work hard to support them and future generations.
About me
I am a current regional councillor. I enjoy being involved with local community groups and listening to find solutions. I have a science degree and Master of Water Resource Management from University of Canterbury. I also worked as a strategic planner. This term Environment Canterbury and Ngāi Tahu will develop a plan to address water issues and meet new government water quality targets. I am well placed to ensure this plan is ambitious and workable.
My priorities
- Respond urgently to climate change, both mitigation and adaptation. Action is required now.
- Protect and restore habitat to reduce the number of native species threatened with extinction.
- Restore healthy rivers and aquifers – a sustainable economy requires a healthy environment.
