Far North District Council

Ngā Tai o Tokerau Māori Ward
The Far North District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Four councillors will be elected from the Ngā Tai o Tokerau Māori ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Far North District Council election.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Standardise kerbside rubbish and recycling across the district.

Equal service delivery so that every community looks good, feels great and is proud to be a part of the Far North district.

Support culturally appropriate wastewater disposal across the district.

  • Support promotion of education resources and short videos re rubbish and recycling – by local personalities for community endorsement.

Continue rates funded rubbish collection in all areas.

Provide wire netting bins for storage of rubbish bags on rural roads as collection points.

  • Oppose the Three Waters asset takeover. Seizure of our assets, which we have collectively paid for, is nothing short of theft. Three Waters is a policy doomed to fail and leave ratepayers on the hook for yet another central government catastrophe. We oppose it.

Sovereign NZ believes that as the most essential need for humans, water, should be delivered in the purest form possible.

  • Hold the government accountable in the complete overall of our Three Waters infrastructure. Pay and then continue to support the council.
