The Gisborne District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Eight councillors will be elected from the Tairāwhiti General ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Protecting the environment and managing natural resources is a key responsibility of regional councils. Regional councils are often also involved in pest control and resource management.

  • Commit to a pest control program for our native vegetation.

    Classify rural land into food production, forestry, regeneration.

    Establish a waste to energy plant.

  • Develop a better and more efficient waste collection service with proper separation facilities and management.

    Ensure the pest management team are enabled to carry out control functions.

    Enforce controls over polluters and any non compliant behaviour. Having serious consequences in place as deterrents.

  • Review the current pest management plans and consider new technologies and stakeholders involvement within them.

    Create a more relevant and working policy for waste management and minimisation. Include opportunities to educate communities.

    Give strength to the enforcement and compliance policy and allocate resources that will ensure regulator monitoring happens.

  • Promote the planting of regenerative native forests for future generations to enjoy and support native wildlife species to thrive.

    Establish a specified restricted hazardous transport route through the city for fuel tankers and chemicals carriers.

    Workshops with Federated Farmers to develop customised templates for farmers to use for environmental planning.

  • Committed to pest control and biodiversity. Fully research to ensure that eradication does not bring associated problems.

    Committed to calling for less pollen pollution from huge carbon sinks comprising pines – see need to research alternatives – natives.

    Committed to education for compliance rather than heavy enforcement. Enforcement against major and deviant management – including council.

  • I oppose the use of 1080.

    I will not waste money environmentally monitoring.

    Save rate payers money by cutting back on green feel good initiatives and monitoring council relations with Waste Management.

  • Adequately resource council's environmental monitoring and reporting department to ensure resource consent compliance and enforcement.

    Establish a wetland to filter the city's wastewater after treatment so the water can then be used for commercial irrigation.

    Require the region's rubbish truck fleet to be electrified by 2024.

  • Collaborate more with landowners, communities and iwi to improve biodiversity.

    Educate people on pest plants and animals, how to eradicate and step up plant and pest management.

    Promote enforcement and compliance of our biodiversity policy.

  • Provide a platform for all the programmes of work in biodiversity to be communicating with each other.

    Ensure that council is accountable for environmental monitoring and enforcement of consents and land use compliance.

  • What happened at Tologa Bay should never happen again. Needs to be a focus on enforcement and compliance in this area so that it doesn't.

    Assist recycling and promote recyclable products where possible.

    Lead by example. Gisborne Airport excellent example of this being the most sustainable in the country. Something we should be proud of.

  • Encourage council to undertake a feasibility plan for rail to minimise the amount of logging trucks.

    Encourage council to implement micro-chipping of cats.
