Grey District Council

Eastern Ward
The Grey District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of eight councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Two councillors will be elected from the Eastern ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Grey District Council election.

Why I'm standing

I believe the Grey District is a fantastic place to live but we need to do all we can to look after our residents from cradle to grave and everything in between. I see gaps that I hope to address. Particularly for the senior citizens, and the disabled in our community which, when utilised, can provide benefits to our communities which council can draw upon.

About me

I have participated in community consultation since 1989, and ever since with letters to the editor and submissions to council and parliament. Also I have had different governance roles like on district health board advisory committee and NGOs. I'm a grassroots person and I am sure that will inform a lot of what I bring to council. The fact that I've never worked inside bureaucratic systems means I come at things from street level. I think differently than career bureaucrats.

My priorities
  1. Address the rates imbalance beyond tinkering with the formula and I have got ideas for that.
  2. I will take all of the portfolio for the elderly to ensure they get equal consideration in all things.
  3. I would like the council and Development West Coast and local Iwi to all work together on housing.
