Hastings District Council

Takitimu Māori Ward
The Hastings District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 15 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Takitimu Māori ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Hastings District Council election.

Why I'm standing

The new Māori wards are an opportunity for our voice and values to be part of the decision making processes at the local government level. I am standing to enact meaningful action from Māori representation around all policies and to serve the community. It is my wish to be involved with decisions of local government regarding long term plans, ensuring they are for the good of all involved.

About me

I was born, raised and live in the Hawkes Bay. I whakapapa to Rongomaiwahine and Kahungunu. I am a teacher. I am married with two children. My father Morehu was one of eight children, and so am I. Like a lot of whānau, we played hockey and also did stints at the works – him at Whakatū, me at Tomoana. Dad became a wharfie and later was a Minister with the Anglican Māori Mission.

My priorities
  1. Oppose rates increases – they should not be the norm! Review current rates spending is needed!
  2. Increase Māori home ownership including reducing red tape for housing applications on whānau land.
  3. Make jobs more attractive to job-seekers through education and re-skilling of the workforce.
