Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Address longstanding infrastructure issues to ensure we adapt and prepare for climate-related impacts.
Champion a climate change plan that is about preparing for inevitable impacts rather than tokenistic prevention or mitigation steps.
Tackle the urgent issue of earthquake prone buildings along our main streets by working constructively and innovatively with property owners.
Establish a work model so all councillors as a team connect our communities across the district to enable climate ready communities.
Council vehicles where appropriate are electric vehicle or other, including contractors who are looking at their own personal/business footprint.
Establish an ongoing planting program for our coastlines to help in building resilience.
