Nelson City Council

Whakatū Māori Ward
The Nelson City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. One councillor will be elected from the Whakatū Māori ward. The other councillors will be elected from other wards or by all voters in the city. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Nelson City Council election.

Why I'm standing

VOTE #1 Bernie Goldsmith. If elected, I will be the first Māori Woman elected to Nelson Council in over 145 years and the first in the Māori Ward Seat. As your Māori Ward I will be your eyes, your ears and your voice at the table. GOALS: Increase the Māori Roll by 25% in 2025. Encourage Māori participation in local politics.

About me

I bring this belief to the decision making table: TE TINO RANGATIRATANGA. Self determination, sovereignty, independence and autonomy. When we implement these principles, then we can begin to move forward together...and it begins with one guaranteed seat at the decision making table.

My priorities
  1. Affordable housing. Our reality: 60% of homeless are Māori and 40% are public housing tenants.
  2. Free public, reliable transport: 56% Māori are employed full time. This will help them get to work.
  3. Implement Te Tino Rangatiratanga: the wellbeing of Māori improves when we make decisions for ourselves.
