Northland Regional Council

Far North General Constituency
The Northland Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of nine councillors. Why I'm standing

I am standing to get NRC back on track as a non-bureaucratic can-do council. All councils in NZ will face a storm of often ill-founded changes from central government. My observation is that NRC tacitly approves government's restructuring plans, that most NRC staff and councillors have little experience or understanding of. Decision-making needs to be kept as local as possible rather than centralised to Whangārei and Auckland. You need less talk and more done.

About me

In my time at both Far North District Council (FNDC) and Northland Regional Council (NRC) I have effectively chaired, with high completion rates, the largest operational committees of both councils – FNDC roading and drainage, NRC environmental management. I am very output and anti-waste focussed. I was ex-officio member or chair of all NRC's catchment committees. Most enjoyable was working with the Far North community implementing the Awanui Flood Management Scheme on a consensus basis, proving such big decisions are best made locally.

My priorities
  1. Challenge Northland Regional Council's indifference to large and never ending rate increases.
  2. Complete the Awanui flood management scheme and implement effective flood and sediment management in Northland rivers.
  3. Maintain Northland's road system so that it is fit for purpose and provides good route security.
