Dunedin Constituency
The Otago Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 11 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). Six councillors will be elected from the Dunedin constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Support and promote walking and cycling access throughout the region.

    Support and promote cheap bus fares such as the $2 fare.

    Support and promote modern electric buses.

  • Delegate the urban bus services to Dunedin and Queenstown to allow them to better manage their local authorities.

    Conduct an inquiry into the frequently cancelled bus services to find out how it happened, where the costs fell, and how it can be avoided.

    Carry out a full review of public transport in Dunedin jointly with the Dunedin City Council to re-examine everything to ensure it's ready for the future.

  • Retake council ownership of Orbus under the SPTF and improve driver contracts to attract more bus drivers.

    Introducing a bus route to the Dunedin Airport and coordinate with Dunedin City Council and Queenstown Lakes District Council to improve services to better suit community needs.

    Make 100% of new buses electric, and replace more of the current fleet with electric buses over time.

  • Set up cooperative management structures with DCC and QLDC to operate efficient public transport that is responsive to community needs.

    Institute free bus travel in Dunedin and Queenstown to increase patronage and remove more cars from our roads.

    Oppose any airport development at Tarras.

  • Retain the bus services in Otago Regional Council hands.

    Ensure that Port Otago does proper and regular dredging in boat mooring and launching areas.

    Monitor bus hubs to ensure children are not being assaulted or bullied.

  • Help Slime the Nitrate Monster to return to its home up river with comprehensive accessible public transportation.

    Create interregional passenger rail so Slime the Nitrate Monster can easily travel to more lakes and more rivers in Te Waipounamu.

    Keep footpaths away from my slimy rivers and lakes to prevent the human whimpering caused by poisoned, sick and dead dogs.

  • Foster a greater understanding of public transport opportunities. Know where service does not meet actual/potential demand and adapt.

    Recognise unique needs, eg action is needed to stop congestion halting Queenstown buses, while retaining Dunedin student walking culture.

    Make public transport fun, exciting, easy and accessible. Really think about what people enjoy and incorporate it into a great experience.

  • Handover the management of public transport to the city councils and focus the Otago Regional Council on environmental management.

  • Ensure signage and speed reduction measures around schools and early childhood services are consistent and effective.

    Invest in public transport that is practical and accessible for all.

    Consider inequities and build an action plan to reduce transport inequity across the community.

  • Re-instate full bus service, bringing bus service under public ownership and Implement free of charge public transport.

    Participate in setting up a nationwide ticketing system for flight free travel including rail, bus, ferry.

    Encourage public and active transport over private vehicle use and long distance ground transport over flights, adding fees where possible.
