Mayor of Porirua

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the city and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Why I'm standing

I want to see local democracy reinvigorated, rather than having local government act as an arm of central government. Party machines have no place in local democracy. We need to end damaging social polarisation of recent years, as discrimination is not the Kiwi way. I want to build an inclusive city that properly serves all of its people. I particularly want to see increased opportunities for young people.

About me

I am a writer, researcher and public speaker, primarily in the fields of energy and international finance. My background is in science and law. I have been a research fellow at Oxford and executive coordinator of the Agri-Energy Producers' Association of Ontario. Significant challenges in the fields of energy and finance lie directly ahead, and these are fields with which I am very familiar. I would like to help Porirua to navigate them.

My priorities
  1. Renew local government independence and refresh local democracy.
  2. Reduce polarisation by encouraging mutual understanding. Restore the damaged fabric of society.
  3. Implement greater resilience in the face of foreseeable adverse events, both domestic and external.
