Porirua City Council

Pāuatahanui General Ward
The Porirua City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the city). Four councillors will be elected from the Pāuatahanui ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Porirua City Council election.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Ensure our commitment to greater infrastructure spending on Three Waters brings the results we want in any move to a new water entity.

Support region-wide work to encourage recycling and better use of green waste.

  • Retain ownership and control of water and sewerage infrastructure. Oppose Three Waters, including opposing water fluoridation.

Improve the hygiene of public toilets.

Introduce landfill gas collection and subsequent electricity generation at the dump.

  • Provide more rubbish bins to help reduce litter clogging our drains and polluting our harbour.

Prioritise our investment in Three Waters infrastructure to stop pollutants entering our waterways.

Review our rubbish collection options to reduce the impact on our landfill and environment

  • Fix the sewage leaks from the treatment plants.

Reduce contamination of curbside recycling through increased education and reward (not punishment).

Fix the waste water and storm water leaks. How can future water meters be considered when the water movement ecosystem is broken?

  • Prioritise sustainable water infrastructure, targeting a reduction in sewerage and stormwater contamination of our waterways and harbour.

Support Three Waters reform – Porirua City Council is simply not capable of making the investments needed to repair our water infrastructure.

Establish council rubbish bins alongside our recycling collection program to reduce recycling contamination, litter, and fly dumping.

  • Deliver Three Waters infrastructure in preparation for growth.

Review dog licensing cost to increase community uptake.

Council to check stormwater grates are clear of debris and rubbish before approaching weather events.

  • Commit to ensuring that the proposed Three Waters government legislation does not happen.

Propose that councillors do not have to pay dog registration fees for English Mastiffs.
