This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Rotorua District Council election.

Rates and revenue

The work of local government is funded mainly by property taxes in the local area, known as rates. This makes up around 60% of council expenditure, with the rest coming from user charges, investment income, regulatory fees and roading subsidies. Councils can also borrow money to spread the cost of large investments such as infrastructure over a longer period of time.

  • Commit to a review of our district direction and costs to minimise waste, to live within our means and stop borrowing.

Prioritise spending on core responsibilities (stormwater, wastewater, roading, and other infrastructure).

Argue for a commitment from council for a higher level of investment in our rural communities, including roading and infrastructure.

  • Repurpose the business and economic development levy from rates for rural and put towards better level of service for roads.

Ensure that all fees and charges are relative to the user rather than a general approach.

Ensure the UAGC stays at or near the 30% allowable to keep general rates for rural ratepayers equitable to LOS.
