Climate change and resilience
Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.
Establish a collaborative community engagement approach on climate change, connect experts early with communities on issues and strategies.
Ensure that council behaviours display good practice, encourage and support local initiatives to grow a resilient community.
Consider and incorporate explicit documented climate change perspectives into plans, projects, activities and decisions.
Continue with climate change initiatives of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, remain carbon negative.
Engage with communities to encourage, promote and explore innovative solutions to reduce climate emergencies.
Emergency Management Plan to work with community organisations. Assets and Services Committee to be part of the Civil Defence Emergency Management Group.
Make sure that planning rules push new houses to be much more climate-friendly. Houses that suit our climate, town plans that cut CO2.
More flooding will happen due to climate change. We need new ways to reduce floods, and better ways to reduce the impact on people.
Many rural roads are at risk of climate-caused disasters. We need better preparation to help remote and isolated areas be ready for this.
