Mararoa Waimea Ward
The Southland District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Mararoa Waimea ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Ensure that the open spaces project funds are used effectively and are not wasted on unnecessary consultants and reports.

    Develop a framework to support community led development initiatives so that council can be an enabler for our communities to succeed.

    Ensure that the locals feed into any of the decision making around all of their facilities whether they are locally, or district funded.

  • Investigate modernising facilities at local halls to be more accessible for multiple uses in the community.

    Increase access to outdoor recreation and public spaces, including completion and expansion of current cycle/walking trails.

    Ensure council and the resource consent process is not unnecessarily preventing community events being established.

  • Prioritise the importance of recreation and culture through maintaining fit for purpose multi use facilities for health and well-being.

    Emphasise the importance of self responsibility through education, health nutrition, culture, consistency, inclusion and progression.

    Encourage all members of society to safely, healthily and freely express themselves in a environment that has zero tolerance to the contrary.

  • Create well presented, clear, easy to follow resources and processes for starting up new enterprises, attractions and services.

    Build our local public image, and facilities that reflect our desired image – encouraging fun, exciting, and dynamic vibes.

    Promote the south as a unified natural outdoor and indoor adventure playground.

  • Continue playground upgrade work and improve access to reserves and open spaces to provide great spaces for people to visit and enjoy.

    Create ongoing opportunities to attract a diverse range of events that will generate income and bring economic benefits to Southland.

    Review the provision of community hubs in key towns which will connect communities, improve access to services and bring people together.
