Waiau Aparima Ward
The Southland District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Waiau Aparima ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.     Enable robust consultation for the Natural and Built Environments Act (NBA), Spatial Planning Act (SPA) and the Climate Adaptation Act (CAA).

    Support initiatives that build resilience into our communities. These could be community gardens, native nurseries etc.

  • Work with smaller, rural communities in helping them grow niche markets that would attract both new residents and visitors (tourists).

    Design youth work pathways whereby they try varying workplaces to help them understand their passions and strengths for fulfilling careers.

  • Encourage more new businesses to help grow local economies.

    Support higher workforce engagement with potential employers. Help champion the region as a place to work, live and enjoy.

    Deliver strong infrastructure awareness, what needs to be done, at the best possible price, in the quickest time, with the best contractor.

  • Commit to embed community involvement, employment and benefit in tourism through agritourism and nature restoration.

    Create a framework to act on intergenerational pathways for study, training and employment for youth.

    Ensure rural development is a priority to improve infrastructure and services and promote the glorious rural lifestyle.
