Mayor of Upper Hutt

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the city and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Establish a youth council to ensure the voices of young people are heard and foster the leaders of tomorrow.

    Lead an open and transparent council team that operates on principles of integrity, accessibility, fairness and accountability.

    Drive innovation in the way that council engages with residents to ensure that the voices and needs of all our people are heard.

  • Engagement with the public is priority number one. This is best done by social media and small public groups.

    This is an opportunity to have sector group meetings as over the last three years that has been difficult with Covid-19 issues and shut downs etc.

    Council should always be looking and assessing itself regarding how it is doing. Listening to the community is important.

  • Establish focus groups of community leaders, businesses, developers, youth/schools, and ethnic groups to provide input to policy development.

    In 2023 we will consult with the community on the future electoral system (FPP/STV) and specific Māori representation.

    Introduce the living wage as a minimum for all council staff and contractors.
