Tamahere-Woodlands General Ward
The Waikato District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Two councillors will be elected from the Tamahere-Woodlands General ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Encourage safe walking and cycling, particularly for children to school. Separate cycle traffic from road traffic.

    Work on minor safety projects such as road widening, sight distance, median barriers, intersection improvements etc.

    Work on long term strategic transport planning.

  • Advocate for resolution of safety and amenity issues along SH1B as part of the revocation (handover) of control from NZTA to the council.

    Support the extension of footpaths in Tamahere-Woodlands for community connectivity and safety.

    Support work with the regional council to improve public transport linkages and advocate for a review of safety at school bus rural stops.
