Mayor of Waitaki

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Waitaki District Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

We are in the midst of major reforms, including local government itself, resource management, Three Waters, and health. The past three years have been overshadowed by these reforms as well as Covid-19, and I believe it is important that Waitaki has continuity in its leadership at council, including the mayoralty. I want to continue working for Waitaki and I want to see us make the most we can of the challenges we face.

About me

I have served three terms as mayor and believe I have been a credible and dependable representative of our district and its people. For the past three years, I've been chair of the 30 provincial councils in NZ, allowing me to work on their behalf and giving Waitaki influence at a national level over that time. It's difficult to keep everyone happy all the time, but I have proven that I work hard for Waitaki.

My priorities
  1. The reforms are my highest priority – they will determine how communities will work in the future.
  2. The events centre is a game-changer for sports in Waitaki and bring wide-ranging benefits to many.
  3. Making Waitaki a health locality network gives great opportunities to improve our health service.
