Mayor of Whakatāne

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Whakatāne District Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

Because I believe that I am the best qualified and in the best position to do good. I have been a scientist and science leader for three decades and am trained in critical and analytical thinking. I make decisions based on data, evidence and facts. I do my research. I also understand how council works. I have decades of project management and science leadership experience. These are prerequisites for the job.

About me

Because I have the knowledge and ability to engage and collaborate with people. To be a successful scientist one has to have an ability to communicate ideas, to inspire people, sell one's ideas and vision and obtain buy-in. I have been able to do this in the past. You also need to be a good listener and be prepared to see things from someone else's viewpoint.

My priorities
  1. Ensure that rates are affordable to the community.
  2. Preserve the environment and water sources.
  3. Harness solar energy resources for the benefit of the community.
