Ōkurei Māori Constituency
The Bay of Plenty Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 14 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). one councillor will be elected from the Ōkurei Māori constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Ensure Bay of Plenty Regional Council public engagement is community led, not wealth led, especially with the port.

    Improve Bay of Plenty Regional Council utilisation of internal resources, especially around sensitive Māori issues.

    Train Bay of Plenty Regional Council senior management and councillors on cultural safety practices and how to look after the resources available.

  • Develop effective strategies in partnership with iwi recognising well-being principles of social, cultural, environmental and commercial needs.

    Maintain an informed and influential position on government-proposed reforms of local and regional councils.

    Work to maximise public engagement through effective consultation processes.
