Christchurch North East/Ōrei Constituency
Environment Canterbury is the regional council for Canterbury. It makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of up to 16 councillors. are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region), including two councillors from the Christchurch North East/Ōrei  constituency. Up to two councillors can be appointed by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Focus urban public transport on filling gaps in low socio-economic areas that have no service and include better transfer links and timetables.

    Investigate feasibility of MRT spur line to Eastgate to accommodate the rising population with planned housing intensification.

    Investigate starting afternoon peak services at 2:45 on routes with high student numbers to ease current overcrowding and increase capacity.

  • Develop bike ways and promote e-bikes to reduce urban congestion.

    Increase public transport infrastructure and have mass rapid transport around the greater Christchurch area.

    Promote and enhance the 360 city walkway and promote it as a tourist attraction.

  • Provide low fares, accessible routes, and commit to a mass rapid transit system for greater Christchurch and Canterbury.
