Christchurch North East/Ōrei Constituency
Environment Canterbury is the regional council for Canterbury. It makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of up to 16 councillors. are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region), including two councillors from the Christchurch North East/Ōrei  constituency. Up to two councillors can be appointed by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Protecting the environment and managing natural resources is a key responsibility of regional councils. Regional councils are often also involved in pest control and resource management.

Protecting the environment and managing natural resources is a key responsibility of regional councils. Regional councils are often also involved in pest control and resource management.

  • Actively encourage retirement and native revegetation of marginal farmland and investigate financial incentives where appropriate.

    Formalise a carrot and stick policy for environmental breaches, including education and warning for first offences and strict enforcement thereafter.

    Provide a platform for community groups to co-ordinate their environmental work, ensuring maximum results from their efforts.

  • Conduct comprehensive survey of coastal benthic areas to protect marine biodiversity and detailed monitoring of compliance with agrichemical inputs.

    Create several large predator-free sanctuaries, one for forest birds and one for a large wetland, and enhance for tourism by 2035.

    Track all incident responses and ensure problems are addressed in a timely manner with good communication to all parties involved.

  • Establish Kowhai Regional Park in Kaikoura, including policy work I started alongside mana whenua with Councillor Tutehounuku Korako.

    Increase funding for biodiversity projects and eco sanctuaries.

    Support the Avon/Otakaro corridor regeneration and consents.
