Mayor of Kāpiti

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Kapiti Coast District Council mayoral election.

Climate change and resilience

Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

  • Action the climate change and resilience strategy and continue stormwater work.

    Continue to reduce district-wide emissions.

Work with communities and neighbourhoods to ensure they are prepared in an emergency.

  • Complete tree strategy and accelerate work to increase tree coverage across the district.

Progress districtwide emissions reduction work towards net zero by 2040.

Support community initiatives to reduce emissions.

  • Support continuing development of Council's climate change and resilience strategy.

Support Council's previously agreed aspirational goal of net zero emissions by 2040 and strategies for achieving this.

  • Build on positive climate policies and strategies introduced this triennium. KCDC is a national leader in internal KCDC emission reduction.

Support continued work on resilience including dual purpose built into current planning, factoring in capacity and planning for rebuild.

Take pragmatic approach to coastal climate impact with a staggered trigger-based policy, while initially fortifying natural defence.

  • Continue to investigate waste management solutions that reduce waste and carbon in the environment with a 17.5% return on investment.

Enhance access to medical facilities, including hospitals, for dealing with potential civil defence emergencies.

Stop the fear and monitor climate change with sustained wet peg proposals. My view is firm and already submitted to Kapiti Coast District Council prior to the long-term plan.
